NORTHWEST FAUNA: FINAL DRAFT SUBMISSION PROTOCOLS

---------------------

The Northwest Fauna series is intended to provide an outlet for publications on a broad range of topics on vertebrates of the Pacific Northwest. The Northwest Fauna series differs from the Society’s journal, the Northwestern Naturalist, in that manuscripts are typically lengthier than normally can be accommodated in the journal, and the range of suitable topics is somewhat broader. The Northwest Fauna series welcomes original scientific monographs and significant historical works dealing with the biology of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals in northwestern North America. This is defined as Alaska, Yukon, District of Mackenzie, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado west of the Great Plains; and Nevada and California north of the Mojave Desert. Northwest Fauna may also publish timely works addressing sampling techniques and the proceedings of symposia on the natural history and conservation of Northwest vertebrates.

*Submission Process. Authors wishing to have manuscripts considered for publication in Northwest Fauna should send two copies to the editor. An accompanying cover letter should explain how the authors expect to finance their publication and whether financial assistance will be needed from the Society. After review by the editor, he/she will advise potential authors as to the manuscript’s suitability for publication in Northwest Fauna. Manuscripts determined by the editor to fall outside the scope of Northwest Fauna will be returned to the authors. Board approval shall be required to provide necessary funding.

*Peer Review. Upon receipt by the editor, manuscripts will be subjected to an anonymous peer-review process. In general, manuscripts shall be critically evaluated by at least two authorities in the field or discipline covered by the manuscript. Reviewers will be asked to comment upon scientific merit and quality of the work presented, as well as the quality and clarity of the manuscript. Based on these evaluations the editor makes a preliminary decision of acceptance or rejection. The editor’s decision and the reviewer’s comments are sent to the author for consideration and further action. Unless requested, only one copy of the final, revised manuscript needs to be returned to the editor. The author is informed of the final decision.

*Publication Requirements. While manuscripts are considered on scientific merits only, publication is pending the availability of funding. It is expected that authors will pay page charges. In some instances page charges may be waived if adequate financial support is available. Recent volumes have been funded through contributions from the Society, non-profit groups and organizations, businesses, and government agencies.
