FIELD CREW LEADER position 15 April - 15 November 2008. The Klamath Bird Observatory (www.KlamathBird.org) is seeking a highly motivated individual to be a key part of our long-term landbird monitoring program in the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion of southern Oregon and northern California. This position will provide an excellent opportunity for an experienced field biologist to obtain leadership and managerial experience while helping run one of the largest bird monitoring projects in North America. The Field Crew Leader will manage an 8-10 person crew and will be primarily responsible for continual training according to established protocols and North American Banding Council, participation in training workshops/seminars, scheduling, equipment/vehicle maintenance, and communicating with the Program Leader and other KBO staff. There is also potential to develop an independent research project using KBO data. Applicants should have considerable banding experience, work well both independently and closely with others, and possess good communication skills. Focus will be on safe, ethical mist netting and banding and advanced ageing/sexing techniques. Housing and transportation between study sites are provided. A stipend of up to $1,000 per month is available depending on qualifications and by mutual agreement. Per-mile transportation costs will be reimbursed for personal vehicle use. Required qualifications: Strong bird banding and auditory identification skills. Ability to use and teach advanced aging and sexing techniques for passerines and near-passerines. Desire to follow North American Banding Council (NABC) Bander Code of Ethics with regard to bird safety and data quality standards. Strong desire to pursue NABC Bander and/or Trainer certification. Strong desire to obtain training in field crew management skills. An outgoing, laidback and cheerful personality that can address conflict resolution issues with tact and professionalism. Ability to interact with the public during banding demonstrations.

BIRD NESTING BEHAVIOR INTERNSHIPS,

April 1 through the end of August 2008. The Klamath Bird Observatory (www.KlamathBird.org) is seeking motivated individuals to participate in a study assessing the effects of fuels reduction in riparian areas of the Applegate Valley, in the Klamath Bioregion of southern Oregon. Work will include collecting nesting behavior data on select focal species, completing corresponding vegetation surveys, insect sampling and identification, data entry and management including GIS, equipment maintenance, and other duties as required. Applicants should have a very strong interest in birds, natural history and field biology, and be prepared to work long days in the field in possibly inclement weather, follow prescribed protocols, be meticulous in collecting and recording data, be in good physical condition, work well both independently and closely with others, possess good communication skills, and have a valid Driver's License (non-US citizens must possess a valid International Driver's License). It is essential that the applicant be comfortable and capable of working independently in the forest each day hiking in rough and steep terrain, in areas with poison oak, ticks, biting and stinging insects, rattlesnakes, black bears, and cougars. The applicant must be willing to live in a remote area and/or camp on a regular basis. Additional preferred qualifications include: good bird identification skills, camping and orienteering experience, the ability to drive 4X4 and standard transmission vehicles on small mountain roads. Field training on protocol methodology, bird id, and orienteering will be provided in the first several weeks of the internship. Housing will be provided, although occasional camping may be necessary. A stipend of $500 per month is available depending on qualifications and by mutual agreement. Per-mile transportation costs will be reimbursed for personal vehicle use. BIRD BANDING INTERNSHIP positions 1 May - 31 October 2008. The Klamath Bird Observatory (www.KlamathBird.org) is seeking highly motivated individuals to participate in our long-term landbird monitoring program in the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion of southern Oregon and northern California during the breeding and fall migration seasons. Duties and instruction will include mist netting, bird survey, data entry and management, public and school group outreach, and other as required. Applicants should have a strong interest in birds, natural history and field biology, and be prepared to work long days in the field under adverse conditions (heat, cold, biting insects), camp out on a regular basis, follow prescribed protocols, be meticulous in collecting and recording data, be in good physical condition, work well both independently and closely with others, possess good communication skills, and have a valid Driver's License (non-US citizens must bring documents necessary for obtaining an Oregon Driver's License; candidates may be asked to provide DMV driving record). Additional preferred qualifications include good bird identification skills, passerine mist net/banding experience, camping and orienteering experience, Spanish language skills, experience driving on rough mountain roads. Training will follow North American Banding Council (NABC) standards and be provided by NABC Certified Bander Trainers through workshops, seminars, and field training. Focus will be on safe, ethical mist netting and banding and advanced ageing/sexing techniques. Housing and transportation between study sites are provided. A stipend of $500 per month is available depending on qualifications and by mutual agreement. Per-mile transportation costs will be reimbursed for personal vehicle use. BIRD POINT COUNTERS needed, May through early July 2008. The Klamath Bird Observatory (http://www.KlamathBird.org) is seeking motivated individuals to participate in our long-term landbird monitoring program in the Klamath Bioregion of southern Oregon and northern California. Work will include bird point count surveys and vegetation sampling following standard point count protocols and associated data entry. Transects are on and off road and are made up of 10-25 points. Applicants should have at least one full season worth of point count experience, be in excellent physical condition, and possess good communication skills. Required qualifications include ability to identify western birds by sight and sound, estimate bird distances by sound, hike in rugged off-trail conditions, follow standardized protocols, work both independently and closely with others, and collect and record meticulous data. Point Counters must have a field worthy vehicle and a valid drivers license, possess good map reading, GPS and orienteering skills and be eager to work long days in the field in possibly inclement weather, camping out on a regular basis. In addition, Point Counters must have a computer with Access, in order to enter data either while in the field or shortly after the field season. A 3-day training and certification course will occur in early-May. Point Counters will be paid $2500-$3000 per month, DOE, and reimbursed per-mile transportation costs.
