The Society for Northwestern Vertebrate Biology (SNVB) provides one scholarship of up to $1000 annually to undergraduate or graduate students conducting vertebrate research within the geographic scope of the society: northwestern North America west of the Great Plains and north of the Mojave Desert.
Scholarships are intended to support expenses associated with the proposed research project including but not limited to travel, equipment, and supplies. Tuition and stipends for student living expenses may be considered, however proposals requesting salary support will not. Students must be enrolled in an accredited institution, degree seeking, and be a member of SNVB.
Applicants may become a member at the time of application. The recipient will be announced at the society’s annual meeting, which typically occurs in the spring. Recipients are expected to either present their findings at an SNVB annual meeting or submit a manuscript of publication in the society’s journal, Northwestern Naturalist, within three years of receiving the scholarship. Registration or page fees may be waived if other funding or institutional support is not available.
Successful scholarship applications will include the following information:
- Proposal Title
- Applicant Name, Affiliation, and Contact Information (address, phone, e-mail)
- Name, Affiliation and Contact Information of Faculty Advisor and Committee Members
- Amount Requested, Budget and Brief Budget Justification (including additional sources of funding)
- Project Objectives
- Project Time Frame
- Body of Proposal
- Applicant Resume (Resume should highlight skills and experience that will permit reviewers to judge whether the applicant can conduct and complete the project)
The body of the proposal should include need and justification for the study, hypotheses, the study area, methods (including mode of analysis), significance of the proposed project and literature cited. Proposals should be double spaced using 12 point Times New Roman font with one-inch margins in Microsoft Word (.doc) or PDF (.pdf) formats. The body of the proposal will not exceed three pages, excluding resume, literature cited, and accompanying tables and figures). Proposals not following the indicated guidelines will not be considered.
Proposals will be rated based on the following criteria:
- Appropriateness of the project to the goals of SNVB,
- Need and justification for the study,
- Adequacy of proposed methods to the project objectives,
- Originality and innovation of the proposed research,
- Demonstrated ability of student to execute the proposed project,
- Demonstration that the project can be completed within the given timeframe, and Financial need.
